Dr. Tom VanMeter understands the meaning of that phrase as well as anyone in the Thoroughbred industry. A lifelong horseman, he considers the horse business to be more than a profession—it’s a genuine passion. He is committed to the game in just about every possible way, from veterinarian, to owner and breeder, to consignor and buyer, and that has given him a unique perspective. When he takes a horse to a sale, he understands just exactly how much his client has invested in that animal, and how important it is to that client on a very personal level. “I love horses, and I enjoy the people. The relationships we’ve built over the years are very important to me. We’re all in this together, and we can’t ever lose sight of that,” he says.
Tom’s enthusiasm for horses drove him to obtain a degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Georgia in 1985. He spent eight years in public practice with well-respected Central Kentucky veterinarian Dr. Ruel Cowles before deciding to try his hand at Thoroughbred sales consignments. Over the next dozen or so years, Tom was involved in selling over 150 graded stakes winners—including 55+ Grade 1 performers—and 72 horses that realized one million dollars or more in the auction ring. That breadth of success, though, hasn’t kept him from striving to improve and keep growing. “I’m still learning,” he says with a smile. “There’s always something new to learn in this business.”
With VanMeter Sales, Tom brings a wealth of experience, a commitment to excellence, and a desire to make every venture a winning one.
