Spendthrift Farm is one of the most historic farms in Lexington, KY with many of the all-time greats having passed through its barns over the years. Named after the great-grandfather of Man o' War, the equine luminaries to have graced the barns and fields of Spendthrift Farm are Triple Crown heroes Seattle Slew and Affirmed; nine Kentucky Derby winners, including Foolish Pleasure, Proud Clarion, Swaps, Decidedly, Nashua and Dark Star; and leading sires Caro, Raise a Native, My Babu, Gallant Man and Exclusive Native.
In 2004, Public Storage founder B. Wayne Hughes took over as owner of the farm, investing in capital improvements including installing new barns and upgrading the main house and converting it into an office.
“Many of the breeders in Kentucky have come to me and thanked me for improving and trying to bring Spendthrift back to its better days, when the reality is that I should be thanking them for breeding their horses here, and once again making this a historic place for the Thoroughbred industry," said Hughes.
In a continued effort to put the breeders first, Spendthrift Farm has developed breeder-friendly programs like Share The Upside and Breed Secure which have revolutionized the industry and put the power back in the hands of those who take much of the risk. In 2012-2013, Into Mischief proved how beneficial these programs can be with top horses like Goldencents (G1) and Vyjack (G2) giving those who invested in the Share The Upside program a lifetime breeding right in this promising young stallion.
